The Elements and Principals of Design Form, Color/Value, Line, Rhythm, Pattern, Balance, Unity, Variety, Emphasis, Proportion

FORM (Element of Art) 3-D object Occupies space or gives illusion that they do Cylinder, cone, box, and geometric forms (flowers)

Color (Element of Art) Visual perception of a pigment Color vs hue

VALUE (Element of Art) How we get Form Lightness or darkness of a color White, Light Gray, Gray, Dark Gray, Black

Line (Element of Art) Mark between two points Leading Line

Rhythm When anything repeats in a similar Manner You would be pretty sure of what the next thing will be Can be made by Nature or Human-made Could have a movement to it

Think Or

PATTERN or REPETITION PATTERN: ABABA Repeating similar things –You know exactly what the next thing will be. –Usually man-made –How is this different from rhythm?

BALANCE A way to compare the right side to the left side ASYMETRICAL BALANCE –Right side does not equal left side RADIAL BALANCE –Everything revolves around the center SYMETRICAL BALANCE –Right side is equal to the left side

Asymmetrical Balance

Radial Balance

Perfect Balance or Symmetrical

Unity Coming together, and the same. Parts, making a whole We are one!

VARIETY When you change something, but keep something the same –Example: repeating a similar shape, but changing the size of it

Emphasis What is your eye drawn to? Ways to EMPHASIZE something –Small Depth of Field –Light vs. Dark (Black vs. White –Using light (spot lights) –Getting in close

Proportion The relationship between sizes of objects –Small vs. Large

When Speaking about photography and while shooting, remember these elements and principals of design.
