U N I V E R S I T Y O F S O U T H F L O R I D A “ Automated Signal Processing for Data Obtained for Core Body Temperature Measurements ” Undergraduate Research Robert Donatto 1, Dr. Thomas Weller 1, Michael Grady 1 (1) Electrical Engineering: Wireless and Microwave Information Systems Group (WAMI) Abstract Research Conducted Conclusion Background Future Work Introduction This project is designed to enhance research efforts on a total power radiometer system used as a non contact sensor for subsurface temperature measurements. The radiometer detects thermal noise radiated from the human body and relates this thermal noise to core body temperature through a mathematical model linking the interactions among the EM fields, the radiometer system, and the body. This research will consist of constructing a biological tissue phantom that mimics the electrical properties of the human core, the gaining of temperature measurements with the radiometer system, and the processing of the acquired data with the created extraction routine. This research will directly assist the data extraction procedure of this transition to a micro controlled handheld device. The current data extraction method uses a MATHCAD routine. While valuable, the MATHCAD routine lacks the mobility of signal processing needed in an extraction program. Therefore MATLAB will be used as a more efficient signal processing algorithm, which could be easily implemented into a microcontroller. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop a handheld health monitoring device driven by a microcontroller. In order for this to happen every component of the radiometer system must be reduced in size. -Finish automated signal process -Create own muscle tissue phantom -Application: Astronaut Health Monitoring Device The advantage of being able to detect human core temperature can lead to early treatment of many serious diseases such as cancer while they are still in their early stages. - Miniaturized Device Close Proximity: 1 cm – 5 cm Mobile Hand Held Unit Integrated Into Spacesuits -Working on project that models the human abdominal core and obtains the absolute temperature measurements -Lead to a device that can detect life threatening diseases early -Learned how to take radiometer measurements -Worked on Data Analysis -In process of completing automatic signal processing. -Currently five out of seven sections complete -Relates Vout to brightness temperature (T B ) Brightness temperature is the electromagnetic radiation that is produced from the human abdominal core tissue material. -These temperature and voltage outputs are sent through the extraction routine for data analysis 1) Data Acquisition 2) Data Analysis -Not very user friendly -Signal processing is weak 3) Data Interpretation -Learned how to obtain radiometer measurements -Data Analysis: Automated signal processing (MATHCAD to MATLAB) To do this we must extract data from specific computer software primarily intended for the verification of engineering calculations (MATHCAD) and converting it into (MATLAB) which has a large collection of already built in functions and tools for numerical math calculations. - So far five out of the seven sections of the MATLAB file are complete
