Introduction

The Steppings Library- Introduction The Steppings Library and Information Service is part of the Steppings County Library Service The library staff members include: the Library Manager the Deputy Library Manager 3 Assistant Librarians 2 Senior Library Assistants 2 Library Assistants

Story (Part 1): Personal Qualities

Rita Rising- Assistant Librarian Rita has been employed as an Assistant Librarian at the Steppings Library for just over a year As one of her fellow Assistant Librarians has gone on maternity leave, Rita has been assigned her colleague’s role of supervising the two Senior Library Assistants at the library Rita has not supervised anybody before

Rita Rising- Personal qualities To be a good supervisor, Rita knows that she requires the right personal qualities Rita believes herself to have good interpersonal and communication skills because she is a patient, good listener and she has an open, approachable and friendly manner

Rita Rising- Personal qualities In addition, Rita is highly motivated She feels that the Steppings Library is a good organisation to work for and that her experience of working there will benefit her career She enjoys working at the Steppings Library and trusts her senior managers Rita also values the aims and objectives of the Steppings Library

Rita Rising- Assertiveness Rita also understands that supervisors need to be assertive. However, Rita is unsure about her level of assertiveness Rita feels intimidated by the people that she will be supervising for the following reasons: 1.The Senior Library Assistants that she will be supervising have worked at the library for a number of years 2.In addition, Rita is much younger than the Senior Library Assistants Rita is worried that the staff members will not take her authority seriously when she becomes their supervisor
