1. How Does Matter Move through Ecosystems? Matter moves through ecosystems in cycles. Unlike energy which is produced by the sun and consumed by living things, there is only a certain amount of different types of matter on the earth. For example, water. Water is neither created or destroyed. There is only a certain amount of water on the earth. Rachael Machiele-Oram 2013

1. How Does Matter Move through Ecosystems? The atoms of carbon, nitrogen, and other elements that make up the bodies of organisms alive today are the same that have been on earth since life began. Matter is constantly recycled. It is never lost. Rachael Machiele-Oram 2013

Carbon All life on earth is based on carbon molecules. Carbon atoms form the framework for proteins, carbohydrates, fats and other important molecules. Carbon is the molecule of life, it is an important part of all living organisms. Rachael Machiele-Oram 2013

The Carbon Cycle Carbon is Stored in the Earth and Released into the Air: 1. Carbon is stored in the earth in fossils of plants and animals, as well as in living plants. 2. How is carbon cycled through photosynthesis and cellular respiration? 3. During photosynthesis, energy from the sun is used by autotrophic organisms which convert carbon dioxide gas from the air into energy- rich compounds such as sugar. We call this process Carbon Sequestration. This means Carbon is being taken out of the atmosphere and stored in plant cells. Rachael Machiele-Oram 2013

How is carbon cycled through photosynthesis and cellular respiration? 4. Many organisms use autotrophs for food and a source of energy. This energy is processed in the heterotrophs in cellular respiration and converted into ATP energy, water, and Carbon Dioxide! Carbon is again released into the atmosphere. (Carbon is also used by animals for creating proteins and bones. It is stored in their bodies as they live and die and become fossils. It is released when they decay.) Rachael Machiele-Oram 2013
