Journal Writing Warm-up Bell Quiz 1-3 Jeffery left his home headed toward the school. He started out at a steady moderate pace until he got to a red light. While stopped at the light, he realized that he had forgotten his math homework. He turned around and headed back home at a faster pace. Then he drove to school at a fast pace without stopping on the way. Identify the correct graph and discuss the flaws in the incorrect graphs.

The scale of information Communicating Data The scale of information

Can you understand this graph? Why or why not?

Here’s what the professor said: Time almost always is the independent variable

Let’s look at a better one. The whole point of creating graphs is to quickly and effectively communicate the information. This relies on not only good labeling but also choosing units that make sense to the reader.

When drawing line graphs you must have these things. Don’t forget: All graphs in this class must be on graph paper or I will not accept them and you will have to redo them.

Your turn: Position of a snail as a function of time. Graph the points and estimate a line of best fit. Time (sec) 1.00 2.00 3.00 4.00 5.00 5.50 6.00 Position (cm) 1.9 3.1 5.5 8.2 9.0 11.6 11.8 Do your best, we’ll share them in a few minutes
