The Civil War Part 4

The Gettysburg Address Lincoln was invited to deliver a speech to dedicate the cemetery. In a short 2 minute speech, Lincoln explained the meaning of the Civil War. His speech redefined the meaning of freedom in this country.

A New Birth of Freedom Battle of the Wilderness Took place on the same spot that Chancellorsville occurred one year earlier.

The 2 armies met in a dense forest. The fighting was so intense that the woods caught on fire causing many of the wounded to be burned to death. Gen. Longstreet, Lee’s second in command, was accidentally shot and wounded 3 miles from where Jackson had been shot a year before.

Sherman’s March to the Sea General Sherman led Union troops on a march to the sea. His troops cut a nearly 300 mile long path of destruction across Georgia.

Presidential Election of 1864 Republican—Lincoln Democratic—McClellan By re-electing Lincoln, voters showed their approval of his war policy and his stand against slavery.

Thirteenth Amendment—this amendment ended slavery in the United States.

April 9, 1845 Lee surrendered to Grant at the small Virginia town of Appomattox Court House.

April 14, 1865 Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C.
