Daily Journal #1 Write the following questions, in their entirety, and then the answer immediately after: List and briefly describe stories or other instances when you’ve heard about a person’s struggle to survive in desperate circumstances. Make a list of traits that those people or characters exhibit. Decide what qualities seem essential in a survivor. *Turn in cheating policy to box*

Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca ( ) Survived one of the most disastrous expeditions in the history of Spanish conquest And became the first European to cross North America Came from a family of conquistadors (conquerors) Soldier for nearly 20yrs and then joined expedition to Spanish North America

Expedition King of Spain appointed him treasurer and second in command Goal was to colonize territory north and east of Gulf of Mexico Had 5 ships and 600 men 2 ships lost to hurricane, 200 men drowned or deserted After landing in Tampa Bay, ships sent north w/ 300 men to march to New Spain (aka Mexico) thought to be weeks away.

Months later ships gone and desperate landing party had to eat horses to survive  used horsehide and nails made from melted armor to build 5 barges and sailed along Gulf Coast from Florida to northern Mexico. Ultimately, only Cabeza de Vaca and 3 others survived

Surviving Had to adapt to new surroundings For 6 years lived w/ dozens of Native American groups in different roles Captive, trader, well-known healer 1534, four suvivors escaped, set out in desert in search of New Spain. 1536, reached their destination

Home at last 1yr later Cabeza de Vaca returned to Spain, wrote account of expeditions: La Relacion (The Account) as a report to king King rewarded Cabeza de Vaca by appointing gov. of S. American colony His humane treatment of Native Americans may have cost him his job 1545, he lost position and convicted on corruption charge in Spain  exiled to Africa Eventually pardoned, 1552 returned to Spain to end days as judge
