Overview on the Proposal for a new GIF, August Page 1 Overview on the Proposal for a new GIF Summary of the document distributed to the users and available at Beam of secondary particles  Muon beam, about 10 4 particles per spill, 10cm x 10cm, beam momentum order(100GeV)  SPS North Area EHN1 Possibility of other particles as well? Layout, zone dimension  Need to host large objects (questionnaire: 3m x 1.4m x 0.5m), thus ~ 10m (along the beam) x ~7.5m (lateral to the beam)  Fast and easy access, even for large objects (improve duty cycle compared to old facility) Chicane? Shielded, movable roof??  Temperature controlled zone - tent-structure (RPCs)

Overview on the Proposal for a new GIF, August Page 2 An early Proposal (I.Efthymiopoulos, Dec’07) GIF++ in the H4 beam line Proposal/design studies will be lead by Experimental Area team

Overview on the Proposal for a new GIF, August Page 3 Overview on the Proposal for a new GIF (cont.) Photon Source  Old GIF: 740GBq in 1998, 15rad/h at 50cm  New GIF: ~10xhigher  137 Cs source as old GIF (662keV photons)  60 Co source (1.17MeV MeV photons)??? Lower conversion efficiency; thicker shielding needed; short life-time (5.2 years)  Movable filter system, attenuation up to 10 5  Second irradiation beam defined by separate collimator? Controls  Irradiator and beam to be controlled from single console located in Control Room next to area  Key feature: remote operation in unattended mode Peripheral infrastructure  Electricity, fire detection system, gas supply, … see document
