Democritus and Aristotle BY: LOGAN, CHASE, AND TORI

Year/Place of Discovery  460 BC Democritus developed the ideas of atoms

Fun Facts  Democritus was known as the “laughing philosoher”  Democritus was considered by many people as “The Father of modern sciences”  Aristotle was a student of the Plato Academy  Aristotle believed that earth was the center of the universe

Scientific Facts  Democritus theory on atoms suggested that the characteristics of an object were determined by the shape of the atom  The atomic ideas of Democritus had no lasting effects on other Greek philosophers, including Aristotle  Democritus hypothesis atoms couldn’t be destroyed, always moved around, and are invisible. He also believed the number of atoms were infinite  Aristotle actually didn’t believe in the atomic theory, and when he was teaching other, he taught them otherwise  Aristotle believed that everything was made of 4 elements: earth, fire, water, and air  Aristotle views were proven wrong and are not used in modern day science.
