Canada’s Physical Regions

Canada’s Regions Canada is divided into 6 major physical regions. 1.Canadian Shield 2.Appalachian Highlands 3.Great Lakes/ St. Lawrence Lowlands 4.Interior Plains 5.Western Mountain Region 6.Artic Islands

Canadian Shield Largest region (horseshoe around the Hudson Bay) Surface stays at about 2,000 feet above sea level Flat land (Ice Age) Rivers flow into the Hudson Bay Muskegs around rivers (“wet, spongy ground”)

Appalachian Highlands Eastern-most region Many low hills Bay of Fundy (unusually high tides)

Great Lakes/ St. Lawrence Lowlands Named for its major bodies of water Important waterways- major route for shipping, water and power for farming Canals- waterway that is built across land for boat travel, irrigation, or drainage Lock- “water elevator” that moves boats to higher or lower levels
