The search tool executes a sequence of SPARQL queries in response to user selections, adding a clause with each selection: SELECT ?x WHERE { ?x :parameter ?p. ?p rdfs:subClassOf } SELECT ?x WHERE { ?x :parameter ?p. ?p rdfs:subClassOf :Radiation. } The first query retrieves all of the data elements for which the parameter is a subclass of the class selected by the user. The user selection is simply substituted in here.

SELECT ?x WHERE { ?x :parameter ?p. ?p rdfs:subClassOf :Radiation. ?x } SELECT ?x WHERE { ?x :parameter ?p. ?p rdfs:subClassOf :Radiation. ?x :spectralRange :ShortwaveRadiation } Each time the user makes a selection, an additional clause of the form ?x is added to the query, where the property/value pair reflects the user’s latest selection.

Major Challenge How can we populate the metadata repository with the sort of metadata we need to drive our search application?
