Community Health Worker Course Rogue Community College Instructor: Sarah E. Walker, MPH

Let’s Get to Know Each Other  My name is…  I live in…  Most days of the week, I spent most of my time…  If you were being shipped to an island and could only bring one non-essential item, what would it be?

Course Expectations  Become more resourceful  Learn more about resources  Be more comfortable and knowledgeable about finding out about solving problems  Become better communicators  Get to know others in your community  Fall in love with public health (My secret wish is to have at least one person want to go on to get a Masters degree in Public Health.)

How do you meet these expectations? ACTIVELY participate I hope that all of you enjoy the subject, and I provide material that is interesting. Why bother if you don’t like what you are learning?

How do you meet these expectations? ALL in-class sessions are mandatory. We have to get through a lot of material. The content we discuss in-class is complex, and doesn’t work well on an online learning platform. Plus, you get to meet one another. But, bad things happen in life that are truly out of your control. Call or me as soon as you can. I will have to work with RCC on other ways to make up the time. It won’t be easy, but most likely possible.

How do you meet these expectations? Do your assignments and turn them in by the due date. Don’t stress. I understand that life happens. But, make late assignments an exception. If you find that you are really having a difficult time submitting assignments on time on a regular basis, talk to me. I try to be a reasonable person.

How do you meet these expectations? Make this comfortable for you. If there is a particular subject and/or this setting is difficult for you, you can discuss it with me if you feel comfortable. Or, go stretch your legs and take a walk outside when you need a break. If you need to sit by the door or in the back, go for it.

Breakdown of Time

Rules of Engagement Be back in class on time.

Rules of Engagement Support statements with data– Opinions are great, but try to remain as factual as possible.

Rules of Engagement If you choose to share a story with sensitive information, no real names should be used. “Jane” or “John” is fine.

Rules of Engagement Remain polite. No political debates. Yes, healthcare is a messy, opinionated field at times. Good rule of thumb: Stick to the law.

Rules of Engagement Health policy decisions and advice are not (typically) founded on outliers (exceptions). And, there are many variables to an outcome. “But Sarah…this guy I know…he tested positive for HIV and then, he ate 1000 turnips in a year…and now he doesn’t have HIV anymore…” “But Sarah…my friend smoked meth for five years, and one day she quit without any help. She hasn’t done it since…”

Rules of Engagement I am neither a supporter, nor a hater, of the decisions made by our political leaders. I am just the messenger. Please, no hate mail. I get enough on Facebook.

Rules of Engagement Enjoy the class
