The Perks of Being a Wallflower By: Stephen Chbosky

Hi, my name is Charlie and this year has been an on going journey.. I write in my journal everyday, to her of course, because she said you would listen and understand. Please don’t try to figure out who I am because I don’t want you to know.

August 25, 1991 Dear friend, So this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be. I try to think of my family as a reason for me being this way, especially after my friend Michael stopped going to school one day last spring and we heard Mr. Vaughn’s voice on the loudspeaker. Love always, Charlie

I’m starting my freshman year of high school, I thought I was going to struggle fitting in because of what happened last year with Michael. Then, I met Patrick, known as “Nothing” and his step sister Sam. Patrick is the best friend I could ever have, he gives me advice on relationships, something I’m not good at. Sam, words can’t describe her but I’ll try.. She is a listener, she is funny and cute, spunky and feisty, sad and lovely, and beautiful. I’m in love her.

January 25, 1992 Dear Friend, I feel great! I really mean it. I have to remember this for the next time I’m having a terrible week. Have you ever done that? You feel really bad, and then it goes away, and you don’t know why.

Who would I recommend this book to? I would recommend this book to teenagers because the story is from a teenaged boys point of view. Teenagers can relate to this story because it is along the lines of typical hardships and struggles that youth has to go through. I would give this book 5 stars. The entire time I read it, I felt like I personally knew Charlie. Also, the story is all from his journal, which makes you want to know what he will write about next.
