22 August 1776: In the largest amphibious operation prior to the 20th century, the British Navy transports 21,000 infantry across the Verrazano Narrows and lands them at Gravesend Bay. Objective - Brooklyn Heights - the high ground in New York. Washington knows this and has 11,000 soldiers - the majority of the Continental Army, to defend the Heights.
