Urban Planning Assessment

Essential Question How can people use their surroundings in a positive and negative way

Urban Planning Assessment Think about your city and the environmental or social problems our society faces now or is likely to face in the future due to urbanization. Urban planning is the process of organization that is used to take control of the city lands, and how are they designed, including transportation, communication networks, and protection.

Task- to be completed in groups of up to 4 Create a city that is prepared for rapid population growth. Describes a bit about the city (location, population, characteristics, etc.) PRIOR TO BEING DEVELOPED, and the specific environmental or social problem it faces as it grows. When creating your city, you need to address the following types of problems there will be when planning your city: Pollution Bad Traffic Homes Jobs What kind of priority do they give to this issue? What other problems can come up with rapid population growth? You need to come up with 2 additional problems. Please look back about your notes on urbanization as well as Chapter 5

Task continued… Summarizes how the city plans to implement these policies, including examples (good or bad) from the land development code. Is the city likely to succeed?

Remember… each group must complete Create a detailed map of your city Create an advertisement for your city Problem/ Solution chart addressing the issues that will come up

Spiral page 59 – Title it “Before Urbanization” Location Where are you located? How close is the nearest big city? Characteristics (What’s There?) What does your town have? Schools, grocery, gas, hospital, etc… How do people get things that can’t be found in your town? Pollution How might this be a problem as you grow? Traffic Homes Jobs

Spiral page 60 – Title it “During Urbanization” Pollution This is where you’ll discuss and record what you will do to address the problems you’ve identified on page 58 Traffic Homes Jobs

Task to be completed today – Use page 58 of your spiral Describes a bit about the city (location, population, characteristics, etc.) PRIOR TO BEING DEVELOPED, and the specific environmental or social problem it faces as it grows. When creating your city, identify the following types of problems there will be when planning your city: Pollution Bad Traffic Homes Jobs

Remember… each group must complete Create a detailed map of your city Create an advertisement for your city Problem/ Solution chart addressing the issues that will come up

Class, as you come in Please grab your spirals, Grab your planners and fill them out in your assigned seat. One you have filled out your planner, please copy the chart to the right on page 48 and 49 or your spiral

Gallery Walk – 30 minutes Your goal is to get to at least five different city plans As you travel to different city plans, take notes on what they’ve done: Identify three problems At least one has to be one of the “extra” ones Identify the solutions that the planners came up with Mark whether or not you’d like to live in that city Remember, you must choose one city to live in after this

Assessment Choose one city (not your own) that you think is well-planned Write an extended paragraph about how they have planned for the potential problems of city growth. Include all three problems you took notes on Include their solutions Include why you think each solution is a good idea This will be due Monday!
