Chapter 12 Inequalities of Social Class Key Terms

educational attainment The number of years of school an individual has completed. educational achievement Mastery of basic reading, writing, and computational skills.

occupational prestige The honor or prestige attributed to specific occupations by adults in a society. ghetto A section of a city that is segregated either racially or culturally.

socioeconomic status (SES) A broad social-class ranking based on occupational status, family prestige, educational attainment, and earned income. equality of opportunity Equality in the actual outcomes of people’s attempts to improve their material well-being and prestige.

equality of result Equal opportunity to achieve desired levels of material well-being and prestige.
