The King and I The Novel Was actually entitled Anna and the King of Siam Written in 1944 by Margaret Landon ( ) Margaret Landon got the materials to write her novel from her husband, Dr. Kenneth Landon, who was employed by the Library of Congress, in the Library’s Division of Orientalia. She worked of the Pramoj manuscript which contained many of King Mongkut’s Correspondence. This same manuscript was used to write several more works, such as A King of Siam Speaks and Mongkut the King of Siam.

The King and I By Rodgers (music) and Hammerstein (Lyrics) Based on the Novel King of Siam by Margaret Landon. This musical is based in Bangkok, Siam in the year The musical is about Anna Leonowens, a British school teacher brought in by King Mongkut to help modernize his country by teaching his children and wives English and British Customs. The King and I ran for three years, the fourth longest Broadway musical of the time. Premiered on March 29 th, 1957 at the James Theatre on Broadway. The King and I won the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Actress (For Lawrence), and Best Featured Actor (For Brynner)
