Literary Terms In Film

Characterization …the different things that make a character unique. Appearance Voice Clothing Age Gender Actions Thoughts Interests Living situation Mannerisms Jobs Friends Personality History Expressions Other characters’ thoughts Names Behavior Words

Sheldon Mills

Motivation …what a character desires. Motivation often changes as a result of what happens in the story.

Dynamic Character …a character who changes as a result of what happens in the story

Static Character …doesn’t change! Sadie Millstein

Symbolism …something used to represent a BIG idea - usually one that is hard to express.

Foreshadowing …any hint or clue about something that will happen later in the story

Suspense …anytime the audience doesn’t know what’s going to happen next. Stories without suspense are predictable and usually boring.

Dramatic Irony …this form of suspense is when the AUDIENCE knows what’s coming but the CHARACTERS do not.

Situational Irony …this form of suspense surprises BOTH the audience and the characters in the story.

Theme …represents ideas that can be supported by what happens in the story.

Mother knows best!

Protagonist …the character the audience (is supposed to) cares about.

Antagonist …who (or what) the protagonist struggles against.

Climax …the moment when the protagonist is transformed by what has happened in the story.
