ACADEMIC PUBLISHING How a manuscript becomes an article
Overview of Process
Submission The author(s) decide(s) upon a journal for submission The author(s) research(es) the types of manuscripts accepted by that journal and the guidelines/requirements for that submission The author(s) write(s) a cover letter specifically addressing the journal guidelines The author(s) submit(s) the article, typically using an online system
Types of Submissions Every journal is different, so you must do your research!
Assignment The administrator assigns the manuscript to an editor-in-chief (EIC) The EIC reads it and makes sure it is appropriate for peer review If it is not appropriate (quality is too low or the topic is outside the scope of the journal) it is desk-rejected and the author(s) get(s) notified If it is appropriate, it gets assigned to an associate editor (AE) with expertise in that field
Peer Review The associate editor (AE) is responsible for carrying out the peer review process Reviewers with appropriate expertise are identified and invited to review The peer review process is blinded (i.e. the reviewers do not know who the author is and the authors do not know who the reviewers are) Typically three outside reviews are completed before a decision is made about a manuscript
Possible Decisions Acceptance (rare) Conditional Acceptance - revisions must be made, but it does not need to go back out for peer review Rejection with encouragement to revise and resubmit - authors can address the concerns in the reviews and resubmit; goes back out for peer review Rejection after peer review
Editors’ Feedback At the ER, we strive to provide authors with high quality, constructive feedback This ensures the integrity of the journal and educational research in general
Decision Time The AE makes a decision based on the reviewers' comments and recommendations This decision gets approved by the EIC The authors get notified, and get copies of the reviews (without identifying information) The reviewers get notified of the final decision and get copies of the other reviews (this is blinded) If the decision is acceptance, it gets published! If they are not rejected, they are often a conditional acceptance, so the editors work with the authors on the revisions
Decision Process
Wait Time The entire publication process can take 6 months to a year; authors should get notified of a decision within 3 months, however, there are many roadblocks (getting reviewers to agree and get the review in on time, mediating contrary reviews, multiple revisions, etc.); if they are accepted, manuscripts go into the queue for publication
Submission Stats (ER)
Remember…. Every journal is different—Submission requirements, acceptance rates, scope, etc. ER rates It is RARE that a paper is accepted on the first round Do not get discouraged! 1. Rate of desk rejection51.2% 2. Rate of rejection after review19.8% 3. Rate of acceptance15.4%
