DGM 3870 Web Graphics (Photoshop) Bryce Newell, J.D.

Who am I? Bryce Newell, J.D. B.S., Multimedia Communication Technology, UVSC J.D., Law, University of California, Davis School of Law. Began using Photoshop in 1998 (version 5), coded my first web page in Worked as a video producer/editor and graphic designer. Currently, I’m producing a feature length documentary film and teaching at UVU.

Who are You? Name Level of Photoshop Experience

Course Prerequisites Good understanding of Photoshop Access to Photoshop at home or on a laptop (almost a must) Ability to discipline yourself to work on assignments KNOW that you will be able to set aside the time required to complete the class, which will require a good deal of work

Course Objectives Students will practice intermediate to advanced digital image editing using Photoshop and basic illustration techniques using Illustrator. Students will use Photoshop and Illustrator to create web page layouts. Students will learn the basic CSS necessary to assemble a mockup web page. Students will present their work to peers and critique the work of others.

Instructional Materials You will learn from multiple resources Textbook (How to Cheat in Photoshop) Videos (included with the textbook) Class Activities (Tutorials and Discussion) Instructor (stuff I make up just for you) Classmates (peer-to-peer instruction) Internet (web tutorials)

Assignments Each week you have several assignments to complete Complete one chapter from the textbook (13 total) Write a reflection describing what you did and learned Turn in pop quiz files (cannot be made up) Turn in web designs based on Thursday classes Assignments are due on Monday night (by 11:59pm). Create a new folder with the chapter number and your name Upload required files and the reflection They must submitted using FTP site We will practice this today This is the only way I will accept assignments

Class Time What happens when you are late? What happens when you phone (turn it off) Facebook (save for later) Twitter (don’t do it) (after class) I reserve the right to lower grades based on a failure to adhere to these guidelines.

Peer-to-peer tutoring Once your out of school your greatest learning resource will be the people around you and the people you connect with on the internet. We will practice doing that in this class. Sit next to someone and help each other out.

Grading Textbook Assignments45% On your own Assignments45% Final Exam10%

The New “A” If you do everything you’re asked, according the checklists, you earn a B. Those students who go beyond the basic expectations will earn an A. This is how the real world operates. Those who deliver exceptional work are the ones who are promoted or brought back for additional work.

Last Semester’s Grade Distribution

What am I looking for: Each week you complete textbook activities Follow directions and learn new stuff Each week you complete “on your own” (OYO) activities Complete an assignment from scratch “A” Create the assignment on your own and complete it. Should come from what you are learning that week Should be fun and challenging for you Turn in a short refection document outlining what you learned and what files you are turning in for that week.

Reflection ---COMPLETED ASSIGNMENTS --- List the included files ---REFLECTION--- I believe that the most important thing I learned was ___ (put a couple of sentences here) WHAT I DID TO EARN AN "A"--- In order to earn an "A" grade you need to take what you have learned and apply it to another project or new file. Simply doing a better job on the required files is not sufficient. If you used these skills at work to improve a magazine add or web design, send the file and describe your improvements.

Time Commitment 9 hours a week 3 hours in class and 6 hours out side work Some of you with less experience may take more time ”Be VERY upfront about how much out-of-class work will be required. You did say that at the beginning of the semester, but many professors do and don't follow through. Not the case with you! I guess I didn't take you quite seriously enough to start” --from a former student

Laptop Get the tools of a professional! Adobe Suite CS5 (CS4 will be OK this semester for MOST assignments – those that may require CS5 can be completed in the lab) Keep a copy of all your work

Today's Activities Send me an Class name Your Name Your (for sending grade updates) Create a PSD file, named YOUR_NAME_TEST.psd Log into the ftp site (Fetch/Cyberduck/Filezilla, etc) Create your file directory tree for turning in assignments Upload/Turn in the file Look at previous semester work Watch the “Diggin’ Graves” video Look at the completion/reflection statement.
