Education Methods and Adult Learning Principles CHW Course

In the course…  Motivational interviewing is non- judgmental, non-confrontational and non-adversarial.  The approach attempts to increase the patients awareness of the potential problems, consequences and risks associated with their behavior.  It is a one-on-one educational approach.

Educational Sessions Community Health Workers are asked to lead group education sessions on topics such as:  Diabetes  Heart Disease  Nutrition  Family Planning  Parenting Classes

These types of trainings are provided to share useful health information, promote healthy behaviors, promote community building, and positively engage people into the health care world.

Popular Education The idea of popular education is a teaching methodology that came from Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator and writer named, who was writing in the context of literacy education for poor and politically disempowered people in his country.

Popular Education It is different from formal, traditional education. It is a process which aims to empower people to take control of their own learning, to make a social change.

Popular Education Popular education requires a high degree of participation from everybody. Teachers and learners are not two distinct groups. Everyone teaches and everyone learns.

Popular Education Learners should be able to make decisions about what they are learning, and how the learning process takes place. A facilitator is needed to make sure that new ideas arise, progress, and do not get too repetitive. In popular education, people can facilitate another' person’s learning and help each other as they learn.

Popular Education is a learning process which:  Is accessible to people with a variety of education levels;  Addresses the issues people face in their communities;  Moves people toward a place of action;  Develops new grassroots leadership.  Is based on the lived experience of those participating in the learning;  Incorporates non-traditional methods of learning – such as poetry, music or visual arts

Small Group Exercise  Break up into five groups  Looking only at your group category, What resources are needed in your community to promote better health?  Come to a consensus on your top THREE answers  Write these three down (leaving space in between) on the easel pad.

Adult Learning Principals As you work with different groups using the combination of techniques, you may find it much different than you once thought. Teaching adults can be very different than teaching children.

Adult Learning Principals Malcolm Knowles was a famous adult educator, and adopted six main objectives for adult learning principles.

Knowles' theory can be stated with six assumptions related to motivation of adult learning:motivation  Adults need to know the reason for learning something (Need to Know)  Experience (including error) provides the basis for learning activities (Foundation) Experienceerror  Adults need to be responsible for their decisions on education; involvement in the planning and evaluation of their instruction (Self-concept)planningevaluation  Adults are most interested in learning subjects having immediate relevance to their work and/or personal lives (Readiness)relevance  Adult learning is problem-centered rather than content- oriented (Orientation)problem  Adults respond better to internal versus external motivators (Motivation)
