Circumstance of domestic violence in Vietnam There is yet to have any overall national research on domestic violence in Vietnam According to Ministry of Police: one person died by domestic violence per 3 days. Due to High Court: 61% of divorce concerning to domestic violence Before 2002, there was no supporting center for victims of domestic violence

Circumstance In 2002, the first OSCC for victims of domestic violence was built in Duc Giang Polyclinic, a small hospital in a suburb of Hanoi

Circumstance Up to 2006, the first shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence and human trafficking was established by Center for Women Development ( a member of Women Association)

Circumstance Law on Domestic Violence was issued by the National Assembly on 21/11/2007 and validated since 1/7/2008.

Circumstance In the first two years of project, OSCC supported 200 turns of victims Number of victims increased in the second phase of project In many serious cases, victims want to stay but there are no rooms for them

The first shelter in Vietnam At this moment, Peaceful House is the only shelter in Vietnam

Introduction of hotline Built on 1/1/1997 At first, we provided counseling service for all kinds of customers. On 12/1997, we turned out concerned with phone calls related to domestic violence Now, we have a free hotline for victims of domestic violence

Introduction of “Sharing together Club”

There are 9 clubs in Hanoi with about members of each

Club’s activities Sharing and helping victims to overcome their complex Providing knowledge and skills on preventing domestic violence Connecting with other organizations to create strength Policy advocacy

Activities of Self- help groups of survivals of trafficking in human Building core-groups, including women who are victims of human trafficking, training them skills on building group, self-management, economic management,.. Introducing shelter and other services (examining and treating diseases, introducing jobs,…)

Some recommendations We should increase the communication so that victims of domestic violence can overcome their complex and ready to find support when they need Connecting reliable addresses to support victims Building more shelters and OSCC in VN Doing research on connection between domestic violence, trafficking in women and children with Vietnamese culture to find solutions to end violence as well as barriers that prevent victims from asking support from shelters is necessary.
