KDHE’s 2016 HAB Stakeholder Meeting Rex Cox

Past Program Mainly for Recreational Purposes Samples were taken in public access lakes Lake discharge samples were generally not taken. Some lake samples taken in the vicinity of public water intakes

June 17 th EPA Issues Health Advisory for Two Cyanotoxins Advisory or Guidance not a regulation Not enforceable EPA believes enough evidence of health risk to issue Advisory

EPA Health Advisory Summary

Sampling for Public Water Suppliers Summer 2015 KDHE Stepped up its sampling program to help water suppliers with EPA’s Advisory If a bloom occurs in a lake with a public water supply intake, sample the raw water If raw sample above the EPA advisory, sample the finished water If public water supply intakes downstream, sample the discharge If discharge is above EPA advisory, sample water plant raw and finished water

Results of Sampling for Water Suppliers Summer 2015

Milford Lake 13 Lake Discharge Samples Taken July 13 th Ending October 26 th No detection in any lake discharge sample even though lake samples for microcystin were as high as 30,000 µg/L

Marion Lake Marion and Hillsboro have public water intakes on Marion 8 Intake (raw) samples were taken starting June 8 th and ending October 19 th. Bloom dissipated in July reestablished in October No detection in any raw samples, lake samples reaching 10 µg/L

Melvern Outlet Pond

Downstream sample were taken when outlet pond discharged 6 downstream samples were taken All samples were non detection, however lake reached 3.5µg/L

Norton Lake One discharge sample taken Results were non detection however, lake reached 8µg/L

McPherson Co. SFL 4 Lake Discharge samples taken 1 Sample with 2µg/L the rest were non detection Lake reached 4µg/L

Lessons Learned Large reservoirs may not be as big a threat to water supplies as some may have thought Discharge from large reservoirs relatively free of cyanotoxins in normal years Place water intakes in deeper water Smaller city lakes still an unknown

Planning for 2016 PLANNING IS STILL ON GOING Continue to sample lake discharge if water intakes downstream Water systems will be able to take their own raw and finished water samples and send them to KDHE for testing.
