VERSIONS Project Scenarios

Introduction The development of a set of scenarios relating to version identification grew out of the JISC initiative to collect use cases and scenarios from projects in the Digital Repositories Program. The scenarios pick out specific issues relating to the versions issue and aim to illustrate how each can be managed in a positive manner.

The process Between October 2005 and February 2006 a series of interviews were conducted with academic researchers, library staff and a taught course student at several of the Nereus partner institutions. Interviewees were questioned about their current attitudes and practice in relation to versions. The questions were designed to encourage respondents to answer in as much detail as possible, thus providing the project team with a large information base to work from.

The interview notes were then analysed and key themes pulled from them. Similar versioning issues were cited by numerous individuals in a variety of different ways. The problems cited were grouped and transferred into a representative set of scenarios, which aim to illustrate the management of each in a positive manner.
