Parts of a Story How do the elements of plot effect the characters of a story?
Setting Is the time and place of the action Time can be past, present, or future. It can also be a season or a time of day. Place can be anywhere real or imagined
Characters Are the people, animals, or imaginary creatures that take part in the action. The MOST important characters are called main characters Less important characters are called minor characters
Conflict Is a struggle that a character faces in a story Two types on conflict: External conflict = character vs. an outside force like other characters, a group of characters, or a force of nature Internal conflict = character vs. themselves like struggling with a difficult choice or decision
Exposition Introduces the setting and the characters Sets up or hints at the conflict
Rising Action Shows how the conflict becomes more difficult Builds suspense
Climax Is the most exciting part and turning point Makes the outcome of the conflict clear
Falling Action Eases the tension Shows how the main character resolves the conflict
Resolution Reveals how everything turns out Sometimes ends with a surprise twist
