The Gospel What does the Gospel do and Who does the Work? Where is the Gospel revealed? What does the Gospel Show? Resources

What does the Gospel do and Who does the work? As we talked about in the last unit, the Law of the Bible condemns people for their sins. The Law is used as a mirror, curb, and guide to show us that we truly are sinful people. The Gospel, on the other hand, saves us from our sins. We take no part in this saving work. Through Jesus Christ’s death on the cross (Matthew 27:45-54) and resurrection (Matthew 28:1-10), we are saved from our sins and not damned to hell. The Law was given to people to follow perfectly. As sinners, we cannot keep this holy Law. This shows our need for Jesus, who fulfills the Law.

Where is the Gospel revealed? Unlike the Law, which is revealed in nature, human conscience, and Scripture, the Gospel is just revealed in Scripture. We can find the Gospel intertwined throughout both the Old and New Testaments. The New Testament books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, tell the story of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They also show us how it impacts our lives as sinful beings.

What does the Gospel Show? The Gospel Shows Our Savior (SOS). Through the Old Testament, we find the grumbling people of Israel who are engulfed in sin, eagerly waiting for the coming of Christ the Lamb. The Gospel delivers the Savior that they were anticipating, fulfilling the Law, and bringing relief to the people of the earth.
