Canadian Law vs. Individual Rights and Freedoms

 Until 1985, The Lord’s Day Act made it illegal for most Canadian businesses to be open on Sunday  The law was intended to uphold the Christian Sabbath, or day of rest  Q: Did the Lord’s Day Act infringe upon any of Canada’s individual rights and freedoms?

 In May of 1982, Calgary’s Big ‘M’ Drug Mart deliberately opened business on a Sunday  The company planned to challenge the “Lord’s Day Act” – it deliberately broke the law to make a point  The challenge eventually made it to the Supreme Court where judges found that the LDA violated the fundamental freedoms of conscience and religion

 The No-Fly was one of many security measures restricting the rights of individuals after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center  These measures included the Anti-Terrorism Act  See image page 108

 Advertising attempts to persuade people of all ages to buy something  Students are exposed to thousands of ads on a daily basis  How should the Charter provide standards for youth advertising or standards for movies and video games?  Youth Consumerism Youth Consumerism
