TELL A STORY Construct the slides as a story – helps you connect the details. Story helps audience make emotional connection to the intellectual material. Stories are memorable and convey meaning.

PREPARATION Write out detailed outline. Slides include only major headers – your presentation fills in details. Practice, refine, practice, refine!

1 GENERATE IDEAS 2 FILTER 3 CLUSTER Adapted from Nancy Durante’s Resonate (2010) CONSTRUCTION STEPS

GAUGE YOUR AUDIENCE Briefly introduce yourself. Identify experience of the audience on topic.

COMMUNICATE FROM THE OVERLAP AREAS OF COMMON KNOWLEDGE

CREATE COMMON GROUND AS YOU PRESENT

MAKE A PERSONAL CONNECTION Talk to audience like long time Professional associates – not like strangers. Show your personality, humor – but stay professional. Remember you are learning too – avoid arrogance at all costs! Goal is to make connection with everyone in the room.

REPEAT THE MESSAGE Repeat the major points in different ways. Use analogies. People have different learning styles, not everyone will connect to same delivery style.

THING FACT AVOID TOO MUCH DETAIL

KEEP IT SIMPLE ONE session to communicate your information. No long, complicated tables, graphs, formulas. Simple, direct charts or graphs OK. Remember the 40 word per slide rule. Short burst of complexity OK for short demo.

CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES TO POWER POINT Multi-media. Mind Map such as Prezi.

KEEP COMING BACK TO THE STORY Repeatedly connect presentation to the storyline. Be explicit and obvious; avoids confusion. People more likely to recall good story than bunch of facts.

DELIVERY MATTERS Tell a story. Graphics, pictures, humor help people remember a story. Connecting with the audience enhances communication. Keep it simple, direct. Simple and direct most effective in the limited time to communicate.
