Tuesday, March 10 Today you need… A foldable, worksheet, and comp. book I CAN combine sentences by adding different types of phrases. Be in your seat when the bell rings. You do not get recess-- you have to earn it! BW: Copy into Comp Book

Adding Phrases involves… Taking 2 independent clauses and shortening one into a phrase to combine 2 sentences.

Gerund Phrases verb + -ing Acts like a noun –Example: Julie like fishing in a mountain stream. Julie also likes to swim in a cool mountain stream. –Julie likes fishing and swimming in a cool mountain stream

Participle Phrase –Verb + -ed or –ing –Acts like an adjective –Example: The empire State building was constructed in one year and forty-five days. The empire state building stood as tallest in the world. –The Empire state building, standing tallest in the world, was constructed in one year and forty-five days.

Prepositional Phrase preposition + nouns –Example: Brown bears gather in groups. They gather around the banks of rivers. –Brown bears gather in groups around the banks of rivers.

Infinitive Phrase to + verb –Example: Bears dig in the ground. This is how they find roots and sweet bulbs. –Bears dig in the ground to find roots and sweet bulbs.

The Rules… If you have a phrase that is an appositive, you need commas around it. –Appositive= extra information (comma rule #4) You have to make sure that your verbs are PARALLEL. –means that your verbs end in the same thing. –Jane likes to swim and fishing in a cool, mountain stream. –Jane likes to swim and to fish in a cool, mountain stream.
