Guin Foss Astounding Inventions Created by Marina Barrios

Welcome Inventors! Welcome to the wonderful world of imagination, creativity, and invention! Many of you are about to participate in a series of activities that may lead you to a new innovation, a process, or a new product. …but first, have you ever wondered how something was invented or how it came about?

Did you know that… “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” George Farquhar

Get ready to create and make your ideas happen! Ways to get started… Read stories of famous inventions Read stories of famous inventions Brainstorm things you wish made your life or our life easier Brainstorm things you wish made your life or our life easier “ Problems I wish I had solutions for…” ● Think of objects that could make life easier for: YOU!

Invention Steps 1. Survey to find a problem 2. Pick the best idea 3. Start an inventor’s log and record ALL your findings and work 4. Do some research and think about solutions 5. Create and test your invention 6. Come up with ideas to sell your invention 7. Plan a short oral presentation, be ready to talk about your invention

Research!Library Read about inventors/inventions Ask you local librarian for resources Museums Examples, models, history Experts Parents, teachers, patent lawyers, Engineers, inventors Shop Does it exist? Is it needed? Survey Will people buy it or use it?

Sample Inventor’s Log My log includes ideas, tests, results, and research performed. Each entry includes date, time, place, and any person I worked with. 11/7/056:00 p.m. My house My mom reads a lot and knows about bookmarks. She and I decided that inventing a permanent bookmark would be a good project. We decided to go to the library and research on the internet to see if it was already invented. 11/10/054:30 p.m. My house I decided to work on a TV clicker instead, ours always gets lost. Clicker catcher invented tonight. Materials/parts: - pillow with pouch - telephone type cord - epoxy glue with connector 11/12/053:00 p.m. Radio Shack, Good Guys, and K-Mart My dad and I visited Radio Shack, Good Guys, and K-Mart for interesting ideas. - At Radio Shack: Sam didn’t know of anything to help not lose TV clickers - Good Guys: John told us about how you can push a button on certain TVs and the clicker begins to beep...
