Self Reflection

Overall, we felt the presentation went well. Despite our best efforts, the turn out was not ideal. However, the one audience member who attended was grateful for the individualized instruction. The administrator was not present during the presentation, so the audience member graciously completed the evaluation form. It was disappointing to arrive for our presentation to hear that none of the residents where expecting us (for the second time). After the presentation, we were able to converse with a gentleman sitting on the bench outside. We discussed the presentation with him. He was very grateful for the information and home care supplies..

Presentation #2: Special Needs O Project Leader: Maluhia Farr O Lesson Plan: Discuss oral hygiene for infants and toddlers. O Group to Teach: Young parents of infants and toddlers (Parenting Now! located at First Methodist Church in Eugene)

The Presentation O Discussed importance of plaque removal, demineralization process, and healthy snack choices. O Explained the benefits of fluoride. O Reviewed oral hygiene for infants and toddlers. O Discussed how to identify early childhood caries and how to minimize bacteria transfer from parent to child.

ParentingNow! is a program that was developed to nurture the loving relationship between parent and child. This particular group generally has 8-10 parents that meet weekly with a group leader. The week of our presentation, we had 5 mothers and 1 father present, all under the age of 24.

Survey 1. How often do you brush your teeth? 2. Do you use products that contain fluoride? 3. When was the last time you had your teeth cleaned? 4. Are you experiencing any pain right now? 5. Do you have a regular dental office? 6. How old is your child? 7. Does your child go to bed with a bottle or sippy-cup? 8. If so, what is in the bottle or sippy-cup? 9. Do you brush your child’s teeth or wipe their gums? 10. Is your child taking a fluoride supplement?

Survey Results Q 1: 2 participants brushed twice per day, 2 brushed once a day, and 1 brushed less than once a day. Q 2: 3 participants answered yes, 1 answered no, and 1 was unsure. Q 3: 3 participants had their teeth cleaned less than three months ago, 1 had their teeth cleaned 3-6 months ago, and 1 had their teeth cleaned over one year ago. Enthusiasm was rated 5/5. Prepared for presentation was rated 5/5. The group leader expressed that we were knowledgeable and that the information was valuable.

Self Reflection O The presentation went well and the audience was receptive. We began following our outline, however, soon it became a discussion. We welcomed questions from the group, and let them lead the direction of the discussion based on their concerns. We were able to touch on all of our important topics, and felt the group benefited from the experience. We were hopeful that there would be a larger group, however, the six participants that were there were engaged in the presentation.

Presentation #3: Pediatrics O Project Leader: Jenny Rudd O Lesson Plan: Discussed oral hygiene for children at Willagillespie Community School. O Group to teach: First grade students ages 6-8 in Miss Suzi’s class.

General Goal O To teach the first graders about oral hygiene and healthy snacking habits.

The Presentation O First-graders answered a pre- questionnaire about healthy snacks and oral hygiene habits. O Discussed appropriate oral hygiene for their age group.

The Presentation (cont’d) O Played a game that identified healthy and unhealthy snacks. We held-up enlarged flash cards showing different snacks. The students were encouraged to yell out the tooth that was associated with the type of snack.

The Presentation (cont’d) O Discussed home care supplies. O Demonstrated brushing techniques and use of disclosing agent. O Ended with the post- questionnaire.

Pre/Post Questionnaire

Questionnaire Results This data reflects the number of children who identified the healthy snacks, how often to brush daily, and how long to brush correctly.

Administrator Evaluation Suzi Swinehart- 1 st grade teacher (evaluator) The evaluator rated our presentation as excellent. Appropriateness for the audience was 5/5. Knowledge of Topic was 5/5. Enthusiasm for topic was 5/5. She explained that the kids loved the dye!

Self Reflection This was one of our favorite presentations. The interactive game was the highlight because the kids were excited to participate. We felt like it taught the children which snacks were the best for their oral health. The first graders thoroughly enjoyed the disclosing demonstration and were excited to use their home care supplies. The only negative aspect of this presentation was not having enough post-questionnaire forms, but luckily Miss Suzi had quick access to a copier.

Thank you for viewing our presentation!!
