Explication of Naming of Parts By Sabrina Masters

About the author: Henry Reed British poet and playwright Born February 22, 1914 in Birmingham Taught himself Greek Was married to Mary Ann Ball Tried teaching, but did not like it Japanese Translator Died in 1986

Genre of poem: Lyric

Interpretation (theme) Sometimes, it is better to be on the outside looking in.

Defining difficult words: Japonica- “the camellia, Camellia japonica, having waxy flowers in a variety of colors. “ Swivel- “a pivoted support allowing a gun to turn around in a horizontal plane. “ Breech- “ordnance. the rear part of the bore of a gun, especially the opening and associated mechanism that permits insertion of a projectile. “

Allusions analysis: He uses the word Japonica to shine light on the war with the Japanese.

A more modern translation: Is already as modern as it can get.

Figuring out figurative language: Henry focuses on nature and is constantly comparing a soldiers life to the way nature is. Nature is free and beautiful, but the soldiers are stuck inside looking out.

Measuring the meter: There is no consistent meter.

Rhyme scheme: No rhyme scheme.
