Films of the 1950’s 1950 to 1960

TV and the Baby Boom After World War II, disposable income and the suburban family with young children and teens became the norm drive in movie theaters dotted the US. Movies became the realm for young adults and teens to get out of the house and be alone on dates. Older actors became TV stars. As TV grew to be common in US households, older people stayed home. This led to younger superstars, James Dean, Paul Newman, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley.

All About Eve won seven academy awards, was nominated for fourteen (a record).Started the career of Marilyn Monroe and showcased Bette Davis. Seen as a bridge between both old and new.

The Call of the Young Gimmicks became the technical marvels of film: 3-D glasses, smell-o-vision and panorama wide angle were part of the 50’s. *“B” movies were the second features for late shows at drive-ins.
