Discussion and preliminary conclusions LIU-SPS dump review

Present ‘hard’ limits Outgassing affecting MKP – Issue when dump changed – Some weeks required to condition for operation – Potential fixes/improvements are: Improved preparation (cleaning, bakeout, …) – in progress NEG chamber in QDA119 – feasibility to study Separated vacuum - new design Moving dump to another LSS1 – feasibility to study Robustness of block – Could be big impact on setting up – check present situation!! – Studies to do with LIU beam parameters – Materials sandwich optimisation possible – Maybe slight degradation of dump absorption possible Forbidden zone – Combination of beam size, QDA119 aperture and MKDV range – Impact mainly on studies – OK for occasional E_dump – Not evident to improve – more kicker voltage gives margin

Present ‘soft’ limits Radiation and activation in SPS tunnel – Needs external dump block with beam extracted from SPS – Probably only possible at high energy

Ideas for priority for continued study/implementation TIDVG robustness and new core design TIDGV cleaning, bakeout and vacuum preparation Shielding downstream TIDVG in present layout NEG chamber in QDA119 Internal dump with separated vacuum enclosure External dump in TT40/TT60 or early parts of TI2/TI8, to use existing extraction systems, for setting up and MD above GeV – avoid using existing TEDs, rather MBS-switch magnets and new TED – RP considerations seem to go in this direction – Civil engineering could be cost/schedule issue – to study
