A GENDA : What is APA format When and why to use citations APA Format Quick guides online and APA manual Citation generators & citations from library databases

APA F ORMAT *A SK YOUR PROFESSOR WHICH STYLE THEY PREFER YOU TO USE * Used in the social sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology), and business Based around the idea of “authors” and “authorship.” Uses parenthetical citations with author and date of publication (Johnson, 2001) Last page of the document is called a “References” page

W HEN DO I CITE ? When you quote two or more words verbatim, and even one word if it is used in a way that is unique to the source. When you introduce facts that you have found in a source. When you paraphrase or summarize ideas, interpretations, or conclusions that you find in a source.

T HREE P ARTS TO APA C ITATION IN A PAPER 1. Title page includes title of the paper and author, and affiliates the author with a professor or organization 2. References page Directs readers to the sources used in the paper 3. In text citations gives credit to outside authors and directs readers to specific passages and ideas from referenced works

APA F ORMAT : T ITLE P AGE APA Title Page: The Header on your title page is a shortened version of your title and the page #. After page 1 omit the words “Running Header,” but leave your short title and page numbers. The title of your paper, name, and school affiliation (Manhattan College) should be about ½ way down the page and double- spaced. This is the complete title of your paper, not the shortened version. Header Full Title Student’s name University

APA F ORMAT : R EFERENCES P AGE References Page: Begin the References page with your short header and page # Cite all sources mentioned in your paper List sources in alphabetical order by author’s last name, if no author is given then list by the first word in the title. Only the first word of titles should be capitalized. Each entry should have a hanging indent, as show to the left. For articles found online, include a Document Object Identifier (DOI) whenever possible. Running Header Title Title of page Encyclopedia entry Website Article from a database w/DOI Book

APA F ORMAT : I N TEXT CITATIONS In text citations: If a work has one or two authors, name both authors in every citation If a work has 3-5 authors name all authors in the first citation ; in subsequent citations give the first author’s last name followed by et al. (Glenberg et al.) If the work has a group author then give the name of the group (University of Louisville, 2007) Author’s name not appearing in the sentence: Teachers reported an incremental increase in plagiarism in larger lecture classes (Hornbacher, 2006). Author’s name in the sentence: In a classroom study, Hornbacher (2006) noted that plagiarism increased in larger lecture classes. Author’s name in the sentence when citing a particular phrase: Hornbacher (2006) argues that, “as lecture class size increases the incidence of plagiarism increases incrementally” (p. 36). If the author is NOT named in the phrase: It has been said that, “as lecture class size increase the incidence of plagiarism increases incrementally” (Hornbacher, 2006, p.36).
