Let’s Review Our Homework Please Read Chapter 2, Section 2, and answer the Section 2 Review questions 2 & 3 2) Describe how the cooling rate of magma affects the size of the mineral crystals formed. The slower the cooling rate, the larger the crystals formed. 3) What are the steps by which mineral deposits form around chimneys on the ocean floor? Ocean water seeps through cracks in the crust. Magma heats the water to high temperatures. Heated water dissolves minerals in the crust, rushed upward, and billows out of “chimneys.” In the cold sea, minerals crystallize and settle.

III. Classifying Rocks A.Classification 1.Color 2.Texture a.Size, shape, pattern b.Grains affect rock texture i.Grain Size – Large = Coarse Grained/ Small = Fine Grained ii.Grain Shape – round, jagged iii.Grain Pattern – rows, wavy, swirls, layered iv.No Visible Grain

III. Classifying Rocks B.Groups 1.Igneous a.Forms from cooling of molten rock 2.Sedimentary a.Layered rock; when particles are cemented and pressed together 3.Metamorphic a.Forms when original rock changes under heat and pressure

III. Classifying Rocks C.Where Rocks Are Made
