To share important information about KS2 SATs To answer any questions about KS2 SATs Discuss / share ideas about how you as a parent can help your child at home Aims of the session

Standard Assessment Tests In the summer term of 2016, children in Year 2 and Year 6 will be the first to take the new SATs papers. These tests in English and maths will reflect the new national curriculum, and are intended to be more rigorous. There will also be a completely new marking scheme to replace the existing national curriculum levels. What are KS2 SATs?

The previous national curriculum levels have been scrapped, and instead children will be given scaled scores. You will be given your child’s raw score (the actual number of marks they get), alongside their scaled score and whether they have reached the national average. The score needed to reach the national average has yet to be announced.

A timetable is issued to school, telling us on which days/sessions tests must be administered. All children must sit the tests at the same time. Test papers can only be opened 1 hour before the tests begin. Tests are completed in classrooms, with any displays that may help covered over. How is SATs week organised?

Ensuring the best results for your child – School support. The Year 6 children will be practicing, practicing and more practicing!! Each child will be treated as an individual. Free breakfast for each child in Year 6 between 7:45am – 8:30am in the conservatory on the days of the tests… Each child will be encouraged by us to do their very best and achieve their personal best!

The best help is interest taken in learning and progress. Supporting homework. Good communication between the school and home. Getting a good sleep on a school night! How can parents help?

English SATs consist of: A reading test A grammar, punctuation and spelling test

15 minutes to read the reading booklet 45 minutes to answer questions. Children are allowed to refer to the reading booklet during this time There are a variety of different questions to be answered in different ways Children cannot have any adult help in this test

.

How can parents help with reading? Ensure your child reads every night! Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction. Try to listen to your child read and ask them questions about the text. Help them with the different skills of reading especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text. Speed reading Reading homework

 The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and a spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes.  The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions:  Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’  Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’

Mathematics SATs consist of: This is a 30 min paper cover 36 questions An arithmetic mathematics test. Two written test papers Test A and Test B Both these papers are ‘reasoning papers’ with NO calculators permitted

Some questions are worth one mark and therefore accuracy is important. Other questions are worth two marks and even if the answer is wrong, a mark may be given for correct working. Teachers may read questions in both written papers to pupils if asked.

Support with homework – not just helping with the Maths but reading the question can really help. TIMES TABLES; telling the time… Help your child to check their work through – this will help them to spot mistakes that can sometimes be easily fixed. How can parents help with Maths?
