Catalyst – April 2(3), 2010 LAB HW OUT PLEASE!  How does mass of reactants and products relate to the Law of Conservation of Matter?  In your own words, what is the differences between a physical change and a chemical change?

Today’s Agenda  Catalyst  Unit 4 Test Results  Finish LCM Lab (20 minutes)  No homework = Bookwork  Notes – Demo – Notes!  Work Time – Stations Tomorrow  Exit Question HOMEWORK TONIGHT: UNIT 4 RESUME

Today’s Objectives  SWBAT perform a lab to prove the Law of Conservation of Matter.  SWBAT describe matter using physical and chemical properties.  SWBAT observe and distinguish between physical and chemical changes.

Unit 4 Test Results  Mastery Averages  2 nd Period: 78.7%  4 th Period: 79.2%  5 th Period: 71.4% better but still need to improve a lot…especially 5 th period…let’s do it!

2 nd Period Masters Angel Alexander Tierra Austin Josh Detiege Akiya Hart George Holmes Heidi Peak Ashley Pittman Marlon Vance LaRatio Wiley Lashannia Wilson

4 th Period Masters Tatiyaan Bailey Mankisha Brown Selena Byers Arthur Dorsey Treshon Hunter Kenisha Jackson Holloway Jones Darniesha Parker Kevin Perillat Chasity Talley Taylor Tilquit Brhea Washington Brittney Wiley Martha Young

5 th Period Masters Timberly Briscoe Aujuan Brown Mason Correnti Carlton Galmon De’Jonel Garbutt Breionna Hill Felix Mari Mario Vecino Dominique Young

Finish Up LCM Lab!  minutes to complete experiment and finish Post-Lab  If you didn’t do your homework…  Alternate Bookwork for Today:  Read pages  Answer questions 1-14 (in sections)

Physical Properties Key Point #1: A physical property of matter can be determined and observed without changing the nature of the substance.  Color  Shape  Texture  Odor  Melting/Freezing Points  Mass  Volume  Density  Solubility  Size

Physical Properties – I Spy!  In your notes, choose an object in the room and describe it using physical properties.

Chemical Properties Key Point #2: A chemical property of matter describes its potential to undergo some chemical CHANGE or reaction by virtue of its composition  It is difficult to define a chemical property without using the word "change"

It’s Demo Time!  Materials:  2 large beakers  Sugar  Alka Seltzer tablet  Spoon

Physical Change Key Point #3: A physical change is a type of change that alters the physical properties of a substance but does NOT change the composition  Could potentially be reversed! Composition is what a substance is made of

What happens to particles during a physical change? No new substances are formed; particles just move around Cut

What happens to particles during a physical change? No new substances are formed; particles just move around Dissolve

Evidence of Physical Change Bending, breaking, smashing, freezing, melting, evaporating, crushing, cutting, tearing, sanding, grinding, mixing, separating, dissolving...

Chemical Change  Key Point #4: A chemical change is a change that forms one or more NEW substances  Also known as a chemical reaction  Cannot be reversed!

What happens to particles during a chemical change? New substances are formed; particles change or rearrange Chemical Reaction New Substance

What happens to particles during a chemical change? New substances are formed; particles change or rearrange Chemical Reaction Particles Rearrange

Evidence of Chemical Change Fizzing, burning or combustion, corrosion, production of odor, heat, cold, light, rust, solids, smoke, decomposition, oxidation, rotting, digestion…

More Demos??? Magnesium Ribbon Paper and Fire Are We Camping?

Independent Practice PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHANGE WORKSHEET

Exit Questions 1. Pick one thing (different than before) in the room and describe it using physical properties. 2. In your own words, describe the difference between physical and chemical change. HOMEWORK TONIGHT: UNIT 4 RESUME

Ms. Stroh’s Haiku LY’s class works hard Stroh’s class works even harder To become masters!

Review Physical or Chemical Change?  A physical change is a change, but only physical properties change  A chemical change is also a change, but it forms a new substance

Physical and Chemical Change Lab Stations  There are EIGHT stations  Each group will go to each station for 5 minutes  FIVE LAB STATIONS, TWO QUESTION STATIONS, ONE HAIKU STATION  During the Haiku stations, you will be required to work on a Chemistry Haiku (5-7-5)  You must include the Haiku in order to get credit for the day’s work, so I expect you to be working the entire time More Haikus for extra points!

What’s a Haiku?  A short 3-line poem with a certain number of syllables on each line  First line: 5 syllables  Second line: 7 syllables  Third line: 5 syllables  5-7-5!
