The Federation: An Update for the CPC ICS 2006 New Zealand by Nancy Muller Secretary of the Executive Council

Articles of Federation Objectives  Encouraging every nation to establish its own organization  Protecting the rights of patients, including choice and access to treatment  Guaranteeing the harmonization of healthcare standards  Promoting awareness, prevention, rehabilitation programs, and integrated multi- disciplinary intervention  Enhancing Quality of Life (mobility, social interaction, productivity, self-esteem, etc.)

Specifically in the EU, the Federation is advocating that each national government provide:  The supply of prime quality, personal care products for management needs  Free access to prescription drugs  Access to physical rehabilitation  Public health education for all ages  Certification of all health care professionals  Incentives and subsidies for more public toilets

National Continence Day in Italy – June 28th  Proclamation of the Health Minister  Promoting Prevention and Treatment  Free consults with specialists  Free medications

Where the Federation and the CPC are similar Clearly, in their common promotion of public health awareness and education

How the Federation differs from and complements the CPC  The Federation directly represents the consumer, the patient – and it and its member organizations are independent of any professional societies or associations  The Federation’s priorities address patient safety, equality, access, and issues of personal dignity  The Federation’s pathway for change is viewed largely through advocacy, by influencing policymakers and authorities

The Federation is an Affiliate Member of the International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations (IAPO)  International concerted effort to address patient safety  Principles of the IAPO’s Declaration on Patient- Centered Healthcare*:  Respect  Choice and Empowerment  Patient Involvement in Health Policy  Access and Support  Information *Global Patients Congress, Barcelona February 2006

Executive Council  Federazione Italiana Incontinenti (Italy)  Femmes Pour Toujours (France)  UROSTO Association (Poland)  Interstitial Cystitis Patients’ Assn (NL)  INCONTACT (UK)  Stichting Bekkenbodem Patienten (NL)  NAFC (USA)

Collaboration Multiplies Resources  At least 100 million adults worldwide (and as many as 260 million) are estimated to suffer from urinary and/or fecal incontinence and related pelvic floor disorders.  A disproportionate number are female and elderly.  The large majority are ignorant of their options. Many have none.  THERE IS MUCH TO BE DONE TO CORRECT THIS. AND MORE THAN ANY ONE OF US CAN DO ALONE!
