 Describe an accomplishment you had to struggle to achieve. Include what it was, how you tackled it, and how it change you.  Describe a significant experience, achievement, or risk that you have taken and its impact on you.

 I can use a writing process to develop and strengthen my writing.  I can write in a clear and coherent manner.  I can produce writing appropriate to purpose and audience.

Application Essay Prewriting Topic:Discuss an accomplishment (read and fully understand the prompt) List 4 events/specific examples you will use in this essay. 1. Working full-time so I had to take night classes 2. Pregnant with my daughter Abby – exhausted after working all day – plus I had a 6 year-old son at home. 3. Took one year to write my Capstone project – 95 pages in length and I read 8 books for research. 4. Up at 5:00 a.m. on Saturdays to read, research and write so I would have time for my family. When can you use the 5 senses and show, don’t tell? 1. Driving mini-van, parking lot, reclining, pregnant lady sleeping 2. 5:00 a.m. quiet house, everyone sleeping, in my chair with coffee reading and lap top writing 3. Feeling with the 95 page book in my hands, meeting with advisors and their positive comments about my work. 4. My one year old daughter standing near me as I typed and me saying, “Next year when mommy’s done with this paper, we will move to a new house.”

 Rewrite the prompt into your first sentence.  Use your prewriting as a guide.  Start writing; don’t be too hard on yourself; just get that first draft on paper.  2 – 3 pages of handwritten rough draft

 An accomplishment I once had to struggle to achieve was when I...  A significant experience I was had that had an impact on my life was when...  A background story in my life that is central to my identity is that...  A time when I experienced failure was when...  A place where I feel perfectly content is...  An event that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood was when...

 Read the article on good and bad application essays.  Complete 2 – 3 pages of handwritten rough draft.  Read your book and record the time you read. Bring your books tomorrow!

 Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.  Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn?  Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?  Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?  Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.  Describe an accomplishment you had to struggle to achieve. Include what it was, how you tackled it, and how it change you.  Describe a significant experience, achievement, or risk that you have taken and its impact on you. Choose 4

 I can use a writing process to develop and strengthen my writing. (prewriting – talking about ideas)  I can express my ideas clearly.  I can use effective speaking skills such as having eye contact and good posture, and using a clear voice.

In the next 5 minutes... Jot notes or ideas about what you will talk about for the 4 topics you have chosen.

 You will have 4 minutes to discuss your topics with your partner.  It’s likely you will each be talking about a different topic.  The expectation is you and your partner will talk only about one of the topics.  Speak clearly, make eye contact.  Split the time – each talk for 2:00 minutes  Begin by introducing yourself.
