 CONSERVATION is saving resources by using them wisely.  Making sure resources do not get used up is one way to protect the environment.  Using certain resources can cause the environment to become polluted. ◦ Pollution can harm people, animals, and plants.  Because of this, it is important to keep pollution from getting into the environment. ◦ It is also important to clean up any pollution that has already gotten into it.

 One way to protect the environment is to reduce the amount of resources you use.  To REDUCE your use of resources means to use less of them.  Example: ◦ You can use less water by taking showers instead of baths. ◦ You can use less electricity if you turn the TV off when you are not watching it.

 When you REUSE a resource, you use it again and again.  Reusing helps reduce the amount of resources that would be needed to make new things.  Reusing resources are saves people money.  Example: ◦ Wearing your older brother or sister’s clothes ◦ Playing with toys that used to belong to someone else

 To RECYCLE means to break a product down or change it in some way and then use the material to make something new.  Many materials such as paper, glass, aluminum cans, and some plastics can be recycled.  When you recycle, it helps save space in landfills.  It also conserves resources.

 Recycling materials is cheaper and uses less energy than making new materials from raw materials.  Recycle materials can be used to make many new products.  Paper can make cards, paper towels, and newspaper.  Plastic can make park benches and doormats.
