What’s the difference between clinical effectiveness and evidence-based practice?

Clinical effectiveness (CE) … is about providing the best possible healthcare within the resources available Or more particularly CE is ‘the right person (you) doing: -the right thing … (evidence based practice) -in the right way … (skills and competence) -at the right time … (providing treatment/ services when needed) -in the right place …(location) -with the right result … (clinical effectiveness/ maximising health gain)’ NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (2005)

In order to be clinically effective you need to … Have the right information Openly scrutinise the delivery of care Include people who use the service in the scrutiny Identify where change is needed and ensure the change is based on evidence Ensure that all change is evaluated Tell others about what you’ve done

Evidence-based nursing (EBN) is … “the application of valid, relevant research- based information in nurse decision making” (Cullum et al, 2008:2)

Seems like they go hand in hand – you can’t have one without the other!

But EBP is still hard to do isn’t it?

Challenges of EBN Identifying the best evidence available from many different sources Critically appraising the evidence to determine its –Rigour –Relevance Overcoming barriers to the implementation of evidence Ensuring that any resultant change in practice is evaluated systematically

Yes – but at least now we know some of the challenges that have to be overcome!
