February 8 th Mood & Tone Mood is the feeling that a story creates in the reader. Tone is an author’s attitude toward the subject or audience of the story. How does tone change the meaning of the phrase “Nice job?”

How Does a Writer Create Mood? The setting, and use of descriptive words, all work to create the mood of a story. –The mood always concerns YOU, the reader.

Tone Tone is the writer’s attitude toward the subject or audience of the story. Look for clues in the language the writer uses to identify how the writer feels about the subject.

Why are Mood and Tone Important? They help the reader to determine the author’s purpose and the overall theme or main idea of the story.

Quarter 3 Book Project: Due March 4th Your will choose ONE of the projects listed on the handout. Follow all directions for each project. Neatness is very important. 2 letter grades are deducted if your project is sloppy and careless. Your book MUST have a lexile level of 900 or above, unless I have approved a book with a lower number. You can check the lexile level of your book on Scholastic.com. Late projects are automatically deducted 10%
