By Gabrielle Punzalan I selected Albrecht Dürer’s The Last Judgement Drawing to compare to My Protection Drawing. Albrecht Dürer’s detailed technique of hatching creates a certain mood through the use of value and the aesthetic theory of formalism. Albrecht Dürer, The Last Judgement, n.d. Gabrielle Punzalan My Protection, September 14, 2015

Albrecht Durer was the first Northern artist to be directly influenced by first-hand contact with the Italian Renaissance. Back in Nuremberg, he began work on a series of religious pictures. Albrecht Dürer’s artwork impacted many people with its aesthetic theory of formalism to create a detailed and religious piece of art. He emphasizes the Elements of Design (Value, Texture, Line, and Space) and the Principles of Design (Contrast, Balance, Proportion/Scale, and Harmony) using his detailed technique of hatching. Albrecht Durer was the first Northern artist to be directly influenced by first-hand contact with the Italian Renaissance. Back in Nuremberg, he began work on a series of religious pictures. He emphasizes the Elements of Design (Value, Texture, Line, and Space) and the Principles of Design (Contrast, Balance, Proportion/Scale, and Harmony) using his detailed technique of hatching. ARTIST- Albrecht Dürer

SIMILARITIES My work is similar to Albrecht Dürer’s based on the technique used. We both used the hatching technique to create the image. We both used the Principle of Design, contrast, balance, and harmony. The topic or subject of both the drawings display a sense of religion and faith through the easily identified theme of God and protection from darkness. We both created the mood of darkness versus light using value.

DIFFERENCES Although both drawings reflect the same topic, Albrecht Dürer’s art has displayed more detail for texture, while I didn’t emphasize that Element of Design. I used Proportion/Scale to show the importance of one part of the artwork compared to the others, while Albrecht Dürer just used Balance without emphasizing Proportion/Scale. Albrecht Dürer also displays Rhythm/Movement at the bottom of his drawing, while mine does not display such Principle of Design.

REFLECTIONS I think that Albrecht Dürer will like my drawing, My Protection, because not only do we both reflect the same religious theme, but we both have also used the hatching technique in our own way. Our artworks are very similar, but uniquely different in our own artistic way. Art is viewed differently through the eyes of different artists. I think my drawing, My Protection, is successful because I was able to display and empathize the Principles of Design such as contrast, balance, and harmony. I also displayed The Elements of Design such as space, value, and texture. My drawing can be categorized under the Aesthetic Theories of Emotionalism or Formalism. It’s debatable.
