Kingdom Fungi fungi - heterotrophic single-celled or multicellular organisms, including yeasts, molds, and mushrooms.
Chapter 31 Notes Fungi.
What are fungi? Heterotrophs that secrete digestive enzymes on organic matter and absorb released nutrients –Saprobes feed on organic remains (major decomposers.

Kingdom Fungi I. General Characteristics 1. Found almost everywhere 2. Used to be classified as plants because they were anchored and have cell walls,
Fungi. Can be unicellular (yeasts) Can be multicellular (mushrooms) Eukaryotes Use spores to reproduce Heterotrophs Need moist, warm places to grow.
FUNGI. Fungi General Characteristics eukaryote absorptive heterotroph - saprobe or parasite cell walls made of chitin multicellular (except for yeast)
FUNGI.
Fungi. Characteristics eukaryotic multicellular (except yeasts) heterotrophic by absorption (saprophytes – feed on dead organic matter) reproduce sexually.
The Fungi Kingdom. Mycology -the study of fungi fungi - singular fungus - plural.
FUNGI. COMMON FUNGI EXAMPLES: Mushrooms, yeasts, molds, morels, bracket fungi, puff balls.
FUNGI. What are Fungi? Eukaryotic heterotrophs Cell walls made of chitin Chitin: found in external skeletons of insects Mostly multicellular.

Exploring Diversity Fungi. Kingdom Fungi Fungi are heterotrophic (break down dead material) Fungi have bodies made of filaments Fungal cell walls contain.
Pathogen: Fungi Understanding the similarities and differences of Fungi with the other pathogens.
Kingdom Fungi. What is a fungus? -Multi-cellular organisms, (except yeast, (single celled) -Heterotrophs, decomposer -Chitin cell wall -Immobile.
Mycology: The study of fungi. Characteristics Eukaryotic (have a nucleus) Heterotrophs (most are decomposers) Some are unicellular (yeast) Most are multicellular.
Kingdom Fungi Common Characteristics: Eukaryotic No chlorophyll and are heterotrophs Cell walls of cells are made of chitin Most are multicellular. Only.
Part 4: Fungi Traits Multicellular, eukaryotic, non-motile Cell walls made of chitin Heterotrophic (absorb food!) –Have filaments called hyphae…used.

Introduction Species Structure Feeding Reproduction

Major Phyla & Species Over 100,000 Species Phyla: –Slime Mold –Water Mold –Coencytic Fungi –Septate Fungi Examples: –Yeast –Truffles –Cup Fungi –Mushrooms –Toadstools –Moss –Puffball –Lichen –Smut Slime Mold Dried Truffles Toadstool

Structure Hyphae Separated by Pores Septum Like a continuous cell Pores

Feeding Heterotrophic Three main methods of obtaining energy: –Most fungi are saprobes Consume dead remains and waste products of other organisms Put back minerals into soil for plants –Some fungi are parasites Get organic nutrients from living host Usually harms host Can infect plants, animals, and even other fungi. –Example: Athletes Foot –Other fungi form symbiotic relationships with other organisms - Mycorrhiza Take organic matter from living organism without causing harm

Feeding #2!!!!!111 Hyphae can grow into the food source Secrete enzymes into organism Enzyme digests material Hyphae absorb nutrients Some make Rhizoids Others make Haustoria

Reproduction Sexual or Asexual Different groups reproduce differently Sexual: –Most produce spores –Spores are sex cells Asexual –Fragmentation –Grows if conditions are suitable Spore

Summary FUNGI ARE NOT PLANTS

Additional Notes Fungi are Eukaryotic organisms. Most Fungi are Multicellular, but some are unicellular. Fungi include molds, mushrooms, yeast, and lichens.
