DOSSIER PREPARATION MENTORING PROGRAM Session #4 Tuesday, June 24, 2014  Review Research/Scholarship Section  Discuss Service Section

Re-cap: Research Statement  What is your research focus?  Why is it of interest to you?  How did you get into this field?  What is unique or novel about your research?  State the importance and impact your work makes/have made, such as significance of your work to your department, JABSOM, UH and the State of Hawaii.  Define your future research goals/plans.

Part 4-1 Statement of Endeavors: Service Activities Activities related to your discipline and expertise that you are not paid for.

Service Activities Includes:  committees served on  leadership roles  professional meetings coordinated  memberships in professional organizations and local community organizations  service to the community (as related to your professional expertise and discipline)

Service Activity Categories  University Service  Professional Service  Community Service

UNIVERSITY SERVICE  Department  School (JABSOM)  University (UH)  Participation in faculty governance  Serving on task forces or other special committees

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE (As related to expertise/field) Examples:  Member/officer in professional organization  Editing professional publication  Organizing conferences/workshops  Hospital committees/activities

COMMUNITY SERVICE (public service as related to your professional expertise) Examples:  Boards  Pro bono service  Providing expertise to community/public  Serving as science fair judge  Being asked to present information to a local school, community organization, or the media related to your work  Service to disadvantaged communities

Service  Service activities should be complementary to Teaching and Research activities  Does not carry as much weight as Teaching and Research; however, meritorious activities if linked closely to Teaching and Research, can have a favorable impact on the final decision  Tip: If needed, it may be more helpful to list any Service activity that can be categorized as a Teaching or Research/Scholarship activity under those sections instead
