Detection of Spatial Connectivity via fMRI Data Analysis Checkpoint Presentation Emily C. Koch Ramesh M. Singa Dr. John Hart, Jr. (advisor) Computer Integrated Surgery II, March 2001

Plan Program comprehension experiments for patient interaction via computer and find compatible interface in the fMRI module and test patients with deficiencies of cognitive ability. Map patients’ responses recorded by fMRI via cross-registration onto a neural map and localize the region of problem by identification of damaged spatial connectivities. Compose an atlas of the spatial connectivities of proficient and deficient brain types – use as guide for alternate pathways for flow of information.

Plan Components Token Tester Program Patient response fMRI data Atlas Cross- registration Labeled images Perform statistics Analysis Connectivity correlation

Key dates 6 February Initiate and coordinate idea with advisor 26 February Complete project proposal 1 March Reference summary presentation 14 March Full update with advisor 31 March Program completion 2 April Full update with advisor 4 April Interface implementation 12 April Test stroke patient under MR

Key dates (cont.) 13 April Begin data processing 16 April Analyze images with performance statistics 19 April Test proficient patient 20 April Begin data processing 23 April Analyze images with performance statistics 3 May Project final presentation 11 May Project final report

Present work to date Development of token tester using Java and Swing – basic framework and program structure in place. Implementation of electro-ferrous interface over hydraulic interface Scheduled first patient for week of 9 April 2001 Organized analysis procedures

Present problems Finding inexpensive interface implementation Contact with advisor More involved protocol not able to be programmed in simple implementation

Exposures Lose patients (short term exposure) Experimental protocol produces no or minimal usable information for analysis No correlation of spatial connectivites of similar cognitive deficient patients (long term exposure)

Dependencies Token tester program fMRI module and appropriate interface Deficient and proficient patients Registration program and neural atlas Powerful processor and abundant memory Time Patience

Appendix: Program Properties Four phase overview Program data flow Sample patient view of program
