Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was not an actual railroad. It was a network or chain of people willing to help runaway slaves by giving them food, clothing, and a safe place.

Harriet Tubman was a former slave who ran away from her plantation in She helped many slaves escape to freedom.

This creek is where many runaway slaves crossed on their journey to Canada.

Harriet told the runaways that a lantern on a hitching post meant that the house was a safe place for them.

After many days and nights of traveling, runaway slaves had to cross icy Lake Erie in order to reach Canada.

Once they made it to Canada, the runaway slaves were safe. Canada would not return them to the U.S.
