Basic Information NATO is classified as a political and military association Created on April 4 th 1949 Main documents include  NATO Peace Treaty  Protocols of Partnership for Peace documents

Purpose Guarantees freedom and security for all of its members: politically/militarily Defends its members against threats and aggression Promotes partnership and co-operation with other countries- increase transparency. Provided stability in Euro-Atlantic area

Leadership within NATO Secretary general is the most important position  Elected by a group consensus NATO Secretary General Anders Rasmussen Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, Italian Navy Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola North Atlantic Council (NAC) General Sir John McColl.
