Chapter 1 Fractions Our Goals: I will learn how to write equivalent fractions using equivalent forms of one. I will learn how to find the greatest common factor of two or more numbers. I will learn how to write fractions in simplest form. I will learn how to compare and order fractions and find their approximate locations on a number line.

Chapter 1 Preview Compare What You Know to What You Will Learn What You Know You know that two items can look different and be equal. = Five $10 bills = One $50 bill What You Will Learn Equivalent fractions have the same value. For example: 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent fractions. = 1/2 = 2/4

Chapter 1 Preview Compare What You Know to What You Will Learn What You Know You know how to order and compare whole numbers from least to greatest. Try it (workbook page 3) Order these numbers from least to greatest: 1) 3,482 3,082 3,842 3,284 Compare each pair using >, <, or = 2) 8,321 8,213 3) 75,096 75,960 What You Will Learn Order fractions by finding equivalent fractions that have common denominators. Then order the fractions from least to greatest. 1/2 3/4 1/6 2/3 6/12 9/12 2/12 8/12 2/12 < 6/12 < 8/12 < 9/12 1/6 < 1/2 < 2/3 < 3/4 3,082 3,284 3,482 3,842 > <

What does the word equivalent mean?

Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value. 2/4 is equivalent to 1/2 1/4 is equivalent to 2/8

Workbook Page 4 If you simplified 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 and 5/10, what would be the simplified fraction? 1/2

An equivalent form of one is any nonzero number divided by itself. 2/2 = 14/4 = 16/6 = 1 3/3 =1 5/5 = 17/7 = 1 Should I eat 3 pieces from this pie or 7 pieces from this pie? Either way, I am still eating ONE WHOLE PIZZA!

Workbook Page 4 What do 2/2, 3/3, 7/7 and 12/12 have in common? They are equal to one.

Workbook page 4 Explain why a number over the same number in a fraction is equivalent to 1. A fraction is a division problem. Any number divided by itself is 1.

In other words… 2222 is the same as 2 ÷ is the same as 8 ÷ 8

Write the Vocabulary WordDraw a model, illustration, or example of the word Definition (in words) should NOT include the term. Vocabulary

Equivalent Forms of One Different expressions that represent the same number What can we draw here to help us remember this new math term?

Equivalent Fractions Fractions that name the same number What can we draw here to help us remember this new math term?

Value The amount of a number What can we draw here to help us remember this new math term?

What is a fraction wall? A fraction wall is a visual support that helps us identify equivalent fractions.

Design Your Fraction Wall Remember that each row must be one color.

Finding Equivalent Fractions Compare the models to name an equivalent fraction. This fraction is 3/4 What do we multiply 4 by to get 16? Multiply 4 by 4 to get 16. So, multiply the fraction by 4/4, an equivalent form of one. This fraction is ?/16 Multiply the denominator 4 by 4 to get a denominator of 16 3/4 x 4/4 = 12/16 12/16

Finding Equivalent Fractions To find an equivalent fraction you multiply or divide a fraction by an equivalent form of one. Workbook page 5.

Page 6 Augustin multiplied the fraction by 2/3. 2/3 is not an equivalent form of one. Augustin is incorrect. Ross multiplied by the numerator and the denominator by 2. 2/2 is an equivalent form of one. Ross is correct. Demitri divided both the numerator and the denominator by 3. 3/3 is an equivalent form of one. Demitri is correct.
